WHAT ARE THEY LEARNING? WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?

Today, I did a seminar in Orlando to about 400 physicians and the room was pretty well filled.  The seminar went well, but about 8 rows back, there was a doctor with a small child (about 6) sitting next to her and this child did not want to be quiet or still.   As I was teaching, I was watching the child, who was coloring, hold papers up for mommy and daddy to see and talking to them.  It was not loud enough for me to hear, as I was busy talking - but I could tell by the way other people sitting around them would look over at the child and then at the child's parents - that others were having no trouble hearing the child - but they were probably having trouble hearing me.

No - I didn't say anything to them about it - just like those sitting around the child and parents didn't say anything either.  Those people had alot more respect for others than the parents obviously did.   Some of those doctors sitting around the child may  have patients that are suffering from some of the symptoms I was describing and because they were so selfish to bring the child into the seminar - where the child definitely was NOT getting anything to benefit THEM, those physicians may not have heard that CMS, Medicare and the other carriers are now encouraging those physicians to do the ankle brachial index to detect the peripheral arterial disease.   Who knows?

After the seminar, I was sitting at my booth and the father - who is also a doctor - came by to have me sign the little card that each doctor needs to be signed by each exhibitor and apologized - without me saying a word about the little girl.   He told me "My mother is here also - but my daughter didn't want to go to the pool with her and threw a fit, so we brought her into the seminar and afterwards, we realized how that affected those around us.  I hope it didn't bother you".     It didn't affect me - but it definitely did those around them - and the saddest part is that they probably have no idea and never will know what the effect was.

My question is - what did that little girl learn?  That's easy.  She is in control if she throws a fit and Mommy and Daddy will do what she wants.    We talk about the problems our country has today and that is a big part of it as the children today have not learned that the world doesn't revolve around them and they grow up expecting that they get what they want - regardless of how it affects others.   Those parents are hurting that little girl and do not realize it.

Hence - the entitlement syndrome that causes people to believe they deserve free medical care, free food stamps, other people to pay their bills, other people to pay for their education, etc....     Yes, the moment we stopped teaching responsibility and expecting responsibility and adherance to rules - we started down a slippery slope and it will continue from generation to generation.
